Associate Professor John Murphy, from the School of Historical Studies, the Australian Centre at Melbourne University will talk about the history of poverty in Australia with emphasis on welfare and social implications.

Gerry Kennedy, Cinema & Theatre Historical Society, will take us through some most interesting Tales of the Cinema. The AGM will precede his talk.

John Wayman, from the Tramway Museum Society of Victoria, will talk about the History of Early Tramways, including Melbourne’s Eastern Suburbs

Lionel Sharpe, from Australian Jewish Historical Society, will present a talk on The Contribution of Early Jewish Settlers in the Colony of Victoria.

All meetings are at Federation Estate (old Ringwood State School) in Greenwood Avenue, Ringwood, Room 4, starting at 8pm. All visitors most welcome and supper provided free of charge. Come and join a friendly bunch of local historians!

Botanical Suburbs of Melbourne

Once again, Gerry Robinson has been busy with his next project. The greater area of Melbourne has a number suburbs named after flowers, shrubs or trees. This time, Gerry is linking the horticulture and the history of these suburbs by taking us through this fascinating subject. A night not to be missed.

28th July, 8pm at Room 4, Federation Estate, Greenwood Avenue, Ringwood. All welcome.

North Ringwood Heritage Weekend

The time has come to highlight the history of this interesting suburb. The majority of Ringwood’s orchards were in this area. The society will be holding a weekend of activities in November 2011. A committee has been formed to look at:-

A historical bus tour of the area (this was so popular with the East Ringwood weekend)

A Recollections Book (we need more relatives of pioneers or orchardists here)

Tree Plantings

Already Heathmont had its turn in 2005 and 2006 (48 Courts), then East Ringwood in 2008.

Bus Tour - 8th November - of historic Ringwood East - ** SORRY, ALL FULL **

“Recollections of Ringwood East” book launch and a large photographic display of Ringwood East’s history - 9th November at 2-5pm, Ringwood East Community Hall, Knaith Road. Gold Coin donation for entry and afternoon tea.
