Ringwood is known for its Clock Tower.
Conceived as a War Memorial after the Great War, the Clock Tower was built in 1928 on the corner of Whitehorse Road (Main Street) and Warrandyte Road. It was formally unveiled by the Mayor of the newly formed Borough of Ringwood, Cr Mackinlay, and not by military ceremony.
The Clock Tower became an icon and, increasingly, a traffic hazard. With the mooted development of Eastland Shopping Centre nearby, it was decided , after some controversy, to re-erect the Clock Tower at the site of the former Coolstores on the corner of Whitehorse Road and Wantirna Road. It was re-dedicated in December 1967.

I would just like to say I found your site whilst looking for general information about Ringwood. I grew up in Ringwood and as a Brownie I recall at the tender age of 8 going to the relocation ceremony of the Clock Tower. Or was it when we became a city? Either way I recall the clock tower in its original spot at Warrandyte road. I went to Ringwood primary and then Southwood and then on to secondary at Ringwood Tech for 3 years then Ringwood High. I moved away as an adult but eventually have moved back to Heathmont. I just wanted to let you know that I think this site is great. Lots of images and information. Just what a historical site should be. Well done to all who have contributed you should be proud of your efforts.
